The Staff at Elk River has been offering women’s specific clinics and tours for over fifteen years. We have been fortunate to work with several of the top women racers and instructors in the sport. In a classroom of lush eastern singletrack, we'll help intermediate and advanced riders build on basic techniques, boost confidence and have fun! Sue Haywood, Meredith Erlewine will lead these fun, challenging and pampering weekends.
These are not racing clinics, but an opportunity for riders to log backcountry miles and hone skills on technical terrain. The weekend will include a mixture of technical instruction (skills drills) and guided riding. Rides are at a social pace. It's a great weekend for women to break through mental barriers to get to "the next level."
Day One: Arrive at Elk River in Slatyfork, shake the highway out of your system, and settle into one of our charming B&B rooms. At 3 p.m. we’ll get together to meet the rest of the group, swap a few stories about how, why and where each of us got into the sport, and try to learn each other’s name. We will check bike and helmet fit, and then try some instructional exercises: fun, informative techniques practiced to make the more complicated skills simpler. Then we’ll head out for a short ride nearby (6 miles) to put our newly learned skills into practice, and then back to the inn to clean up and socialize before dinner.
Day Two: Coffee and breakfast at 8 am, and then we’ll load the van and shuttle to a local trailhead. We’ll ride a total of about 15-20 miles today, taking several breaks for rest and instructional tips. Lunch will be packed and carried so that you may snack all day at your leisure. We’ll finish out the trail and come back to the center by 4-5 p.m., leaving you free to hot tub, nap, chat and clean up for dinner on the deck. Either before or after dinner we’ll discuss some of the basics of bike mechanics.
Day Three: Another tasty breakfast starts our day out right, and we’ll load the van to shuttle part of the way up the mountain. Climb up, drop in, and we’ll hit the singletrack. A fun downhill and ride back to the center will put us at about 10 miles today. Clean and pack up before getting together for a sumptuous lunch buffet, exchanging addresses and snapshots. We are usually finished and saying our goodbyes between 1-2 pm.

First picking up a mountain bike in 1991, Sue Haywood developed her grassroots and gritty style in the mountains and mud of West Virginia. She went on to race professionally for over 10 years on the National and World Cup Circuits, racing on the prestigious Trek/Volkswagen team for most of her pro career. Her career highlights include three Short Track National Championships, a Super D National Championship, two World Cup Podiums, a 24hr Solo World Championship, and winning La Ruta, Trans Rockies, Pisgah Mountain Bike Stage Race and the Shenandoah 100. Sue currently rides for Ibis, Shimano and Stan’s NoTubes and has recently started racing enduros. Sue continues to race select races to keep herself fit and challenged. She loves helping riders gain confidence and have fun learning new skills, and shares her knowledge through race coaching and mountain bike skills clinics. Sue is an IMBA-Certified Level 2 Skills Instructor, and she also makes and sells HaySue's Spicy Salsa.
Meredith Erlewine has been hooked on bikes since 1991. In addition to being a writer/editor and mother of Kate, 8 years, she and her husband own Athens Bicycle in Athens, Ohio. She is an experienced road cyclist and mountain biker, and has competed in mountain bike races at the expert level since 1999. She has stood atop the podium at West Virginia's Wild 100, 24 Hours of Big Bear and 24 Hours of Snowshoe, and is a past winner of the WVMBA Ultra Series. Meredith loves to help people discover what they are capable of doing with their minds, bodies and bicycles. She has been leading mountain bike tours and teaching mountain bike clinics since 2002, and is an IMBA-Certified Level 2 Skills Instructor.
Since moving to Snowshoe in 2010, Joanna Yates has been active in all disciplines of mountain biking. Joanna stood at the top of the podium for Snowshoe's 2013 free fall XC race and finished strong in one of the toughest downhill endurance races (the Chomolungma Challenge) of 2014 as well as WVMBA's Slatyfork Enduro in 2015. As an active member of the local trail club, she volunteers much of her free time maintaining the area XC trails and lending a hand for events and races. She currently holds her Level 1 mountain bike instructor certification though Terra Method, and also is a certified yoga teacher. From the backcountry to the bike park, Joanna is committed to growing the sport in a positive direction.
Note: Due to the technical level of some of the trails and time spent on the bike each day, these tours are not suitable for complete beginners. If you have some mountain biking experience and are comfortable riding for several hours (with rest stops), this is a great weekend for you. If you are a more advanced rider, the skills drills will challenge you and we can always add some optional, "extra credit" loops onto the day's ride to make sure you nab the mileage you are looking for.
IMPORTANT EQUIPMENT NOTE: Please have your bike in tip-top shape when you arrive for the weekend. We have a mechanic on staff for any problems that may arise during the tour, but you should arrive with your bike in working order. You should have a tire of at least 2" to even consider giving it your best. If you are bringing a new bike or putting new parts on your bike before the weekend, we suggest you give it a thorough test ride a couple of weeks in advance. Give yourself time for a second trip to your local bike shop, if necessary, to fine-tune any major parts installations or adjustments.
